Visual Arts Scholastic Event- State Awards
Texas claims the largest, state run student visual arts competition in the country. Regionally, 18,000+ artworks are judged according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for the Visual Arts Scholastic Event or VASE. Approximately 1,000-2,000 pieces advance to the state level each year. The top 100-200 pieces earn the Gold Seal Award- the highest award for art in the state of Texas.

American Quarter Horse Annual Student Art Competition 2014, Amarillo
An annual competition, this art show is dedicated to appreciating the beauty and influence of the quarter horse in America. Students are required to design an original artwork, focused around an essay about historic value of the quarter horse. Richard’s essay was particularly thoughtful, as he and his family have worked on ranches for generations- and have a personal understanding of the importance of horses in raising cattle.

Amarillo Opera Annual Student Art Competition 2014
An annual competition, students interpret a song in conjunction with Amarillo Opera’s Musica Variada. This event features Hispanic Artists in a variety of musical styles from classical to pop. It spotlights the rich diversity of the Texas Panhandle in an evening of song and celebration of the Latino and Hispanic Cultures. Students’ artwork will be sold at auction to help raise money for the Amarillo Opera. My students won 7 of the 9 awards in the Panhandle.

An annual competition, where students from all over the state of Texas, k-12 submit 8.5 x 11 artwork for the annual calendar. Over 4,000 students enter, 13 win.

Student Awards
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is the largest and oldest student art competition in the country. Past winners include members such as Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Truman Capote, Robert Redford, Sarah Jessica Parker, Zac Posen, and Stephen King, to name a few. The competition is conducted on a regional level, and then a national level. National winners have work exhibited in Carnegie Hall in NYC each June.
